The Alphabet- This Strange Love 7''

Here's an extremely rare and rather unknown 7'' from the UK. Judging from the cover, you'd expect some dark post-punk, aggro hardcore sort of thing, but instead we're treated to two emotive minimal synth gems. I had to triple check the record to make sure it wasn't some mixup!

I know very little about this one. The band hails from the UK and this is their only release, despite some misinformation over at their discogs page (the split listed with Invisible Hands is a newer release from the US, band with the same name, apparently). As for this release, it's private press and doesn't have a year listed on it anywhere, though I did come across 2 reduced price coupons for a hometown gig the band played back in the day, included in my copy. No year listed on those either. Perhaps someone out there knows the real story about this one- don't be shy.

Otherwise, as I mentioned, there are two great minimal synth/new wave tracks here, the standout being the B-side, at least to my ears. A little acoustic guitar tossed in there, with some comparisons to Psychedelic Furs at times but with a ton of catchy electronics. Check it out:

BALTIMORE GRAB BAG: Immortal- Paradigm 12'' & Mission- When Thunder Comes LP

I've been hearing some rumblings about Mediafire as well, and though various articles claim that Mediafire won't be changing its service plan, I've heard some contradictory reports and have seen some accounts deleted over the past few days. So with that in mind, I'm going to post a few things over the next few days to get them off my chest just in case something goes down between now and then. Call me paranoid, but why hoard this stuff!

Here we have two post-punk records from Baltimore, Maryland.

First up, we have an immaculate rip of Immortal's Paradigm 12'' from 1988, previously featured on the always excellent Return to the East blog. Very Danse Society/Killing Joke-esque tribal post-punk here, with plenty of ghosty hooks that make it an essential listen. Not to be confused with the Dutch band of the same name.

Secondly, here's an LP that's flown under the radar over the years, and is still rather affordable for those interested in acquiring a copy. I recently included the title track from this LP on Systems of Romance vol. 5, plucked from the 8 Essential Attitudes compilation, but I've since tracked down the LP of the same name, and it's more impressive than I expected. Almost a more new wave/pop take on Bauhaus, or if that analogy doesn't work for you, a harder-hitting version of the VHF album. You can get their first LP here, if the link is still up and running. Not to be confused with the post-Sisters of Mercy band of the same name! Apparently, the band changed its name to When Thunder Comes to avoid confusion with those guys, and are still active to date, with a more heavy sound. You can read more about that here.

Various Artists- I'd Rather Be In Philadelphia LP

Well, with megaupload's recent demise, it's no shock that the blog world is currently reeling. My condolences to those whose hard work was flushed down the drain in one fell swoop. Not sure if mediafire, my preferred hosting of choice, will be targeted in the near future, but with this in mind, I'd say now's a good time to catch up on the archives of this blog and others, while the getting's good! Also, lemme know if any of the zshare archives are outdated, and I'll reupload as I can. I'd like to keep a tight ship here for as long as possible.

That said, I'm sure you've all noticed that there's been some overlap posts here as of late. While I'm still dead set on unearthing long lost gems, the wantlist dwindles by the day. With that in mind, I've been acquiring copies of some all time favorites for the DJ bag and re-ripping them at solid bitrates and de-popping them as best as I can before playing them out. I've also passed a few clean rips over to A Viable Commercial (1, 2, and 3) and more shall be appearing throughout the blogosphere. I've also been revisiting some of my own posts from the past, the most recent being the first Sanity Plexus 12'', which I've cleaned up to the best of my ability (it's still a rather poor pressing, so there's only so much one can do). I'll update at the end of new posts with any archival developments in lieu of making a new post. Don't get me wrong, new and unheard material will still appear here as I get my hands on it, but I hope you guys enjoy the higher fidelity posts as well.

Ok, so all that aside, here's another record that's been shared before, though it appears to be offline at the moment. Here we have an elusive comp from 1983, featuring artists the Philadelphia area. Fantod's original post hints at a poor quality pressing of this record, and while I had in my hands what appeared to be a near-mint copy, the same flaws existed. There's a long-standing crackle throughout the entire record, very difficult to remove through standard means. I tried noise removal as per usual, but I was left with little audio to work with on the second track, even at lower settings, so I kept an even hand and did my best. I did go through and attempt a click-by-click removal, but I was only able to remove the major and isolated offenses before losing my mind completely. Also, it seems like some of the tracks were poorly recorded to begin with, most noticeable on the Sensory Fix track, which sounds foggy right off the needle.

Despite these flaws, this record is still surprisingly rare and worth checking out, as it features early and exclusive contributions from some of Philly's finest. Pretty Poison appears here, in their earlier and more abrasive incarnation, and offer one of the best tracks on the comp. There's also a transitional Book of Love track about dye, recorded soon after their stint as Head Cheese. It's a curious track, nowhere near the synthpop smash of their debut LP, but more in line with the no wave-influenced Jungle Jam tracks. Another standout is Bunnydrums, the psychedelic post-punk band that's been covered many times in the past, and who I believe are still active to date. While "Sleeping" also appeared on the PKD LP (same version for both releases), it's one of their finest tracks. We also have a cut from Executive Slacks, who I presume need no introduction.

As with any compilation, there are a few tracks that aren't too interesting to me, but your mileage may vary. For me, the real diamond on this comp. is the smoldering Girls Downstairs cut, an unsuspectingly nightmarish track with female vocals and steady percussion. Sadly, it appears to be the only thing they ever recorded. Story of my life.

Kevin O'Neill- Omega 8 & A Hostage to Fortune CD-Rs

Here's some goodies from the Remote Viewing files. Here we have two CD-Rs from Kevin O'Neill, one of the more prolific artists from the compilation. Kevin was also the man behind Network 23, the label who released both volumes of Remote Viewing. I'll let John Costello's own words tell a bit of Kevin's story:

"Kevin founded N23 and as well as creating his own music he worked hard to promote independent electronic music in the UK. He played live at the UK Electronica in London in 1988 and organised this successful concert in his home city on March 18th the following year. The full billing was Kevin, Steve & Linda Hillman, myself and Greg Truckell. I'll always be grateful to Kevin for liking my music enough to include it, as it's a bit different from most synthambient and sequencer/progressive N23 artists."

Fans of the Remote Viewing cassette, Costello, and various synth-heavy ambient acts (Deca, Tangerine Dream, Carl Matthews, Black Tape For a Blue Girl, Klaus Schulze, Coil etc.) will certainly find lots and lots to love on these two CD-Rs, which were graciously donated by Kevin. Omega 8 is a collection of tracks from the 1988 Omega cassette, with the final two tracks missing. A bonus track, "Islands Suite" appears in its stead. "Islands Suite" originally appeared on the Islands K7, while an edited version appears on Remote Viewing Volume 1, released in 1986. The second CD-R collects all tracks from 1993's A Hostage of Fortune K7, though the title track appears in edited form from its cassette counterpart.

All in all, there's roughly an hour and a half's worth of incredible ambient music contained within! Here's the info:

You may have seen this one posted in the past, but I've just acquired a great sounding copy and felt the need to re-rip it at 320kpbs for everyone's listening pleasure.

This limited edition, 1983 mini-LP is a true coldwave masterpiece, brought to you by members of Norma Loy and Résistance, you can expect the same sort of brilliance here over the course of six tracks. My favorite is "La Joie," but there really isn't a weak track to be found on this 12''.

Obviously for fans of the French coldwave sound, as well as of early Modern English, Seventeen Seconds, Joy Division, etc. But why are you still reading this? Do yourself a favor and grab this one now now NOW!

Plann- Elektra Elektra LP

Let's kick off this year right, with a generous donation of a rare Norweigan synth pop record from 1982 from the duo of Kikkan Fossum and Lillie-Ane. The former's credentials include The Cut, who appear on the excellent Maskindans compilation as well as on A Viable Commercial.

While these two are credited as the brainchildren of the band (errr, though I'm not sure who the third guy on the album cover is), there were quite a few notable (and also several unknown) contributors credited on the LP. Arne Lund of The Cut was one of three drummers who contributed to the LP, while Andrej Dziubek Nebb (De Press, Holy Toy) provides backing vocals on a few of the tracks. There were also three bassists and several other backing vocalists on the LP. In short, it seems like this two piece had a lot of help from their friends, and almost feels like a Norweigan supergroup of sorts.

The plethora of contributors on this LP leads to a diverse collection of songs, held together by the duo's musical vision. This is one of the more interesting (and therefore, more satisfying) synth-based LPs I've heard in some time, where every track sounds different, yet all are enjoyable. Diastereomer- Mothersun 7''

This will likely be my last post until after the holidays, so why not end this year (my fifth) with an extremely rare and extremely top shelf 7'' from Japan!

I first discovered this Japanese duo through a Youtube clip, and have been playing their tracks almost nonstop at the weekly Wierd records party ever since. This particular 7'' dates back to 1989 and was released on Puppets records, a private press label that was also home to Sect Commune, co-producer of this gem. High school friends Yoshio Fukumitsu and Katsuya Shoman took turns singing on these tracks (Fukumitsu sang and contributed lyrics to the A-side, while Shoman wrote the music to both tracks and is responsible for the vocals and lyrics of the flip). Both played synths, with Fukumitsu also contributing bass and Shoman on piano.

Fans of Xymox, Depeche Mode, OMD, and various darkwave legends both big and small will find lots to love on this record. Many thanks to Katsuya Shoman for the extra info and generous permission to upload these for you all to enjoy!

The Pollen- Factory Hours 12'' & Contrasts CD

For those who enjoyed the Pollen LP posted a few entries back, here's a post that is both supplemental and one which renders the previous post obsolete. Contained within we have the band's 12'' release, Factory Hours, as well as the CD issue of Contrasts, complete with several bonus tracks plucked from the band's 12'' releases from the era. So if you dug the mini-LP, be sure to download this one as well, for additional songs and higher fidelity! "Factory Walk" is also a killer track, complete with that Touching Pop sound we all know and love, with poppier and more celtic inspired b-sides. Your mileage may vary on those.

Fresh from the heart of France, here's a joyous and upbeat coldwave single (an oxymoron, perhaps?) from 1985. This limited edition single is the band's only release, a private press with little-to-no information out there in the ether. The b-side is what really does it for me here, as it reminds me quite a bit of The Sound's "Sense of Purpose," with a lighter touch.

I could make a rather educated guess about which city this band was from, but that would be all too easy, wouldn't it? About as easy as clicking the link below and downloading this little treasure!

Here's one that's been posted elsewhere in the past, but I've given my own copy a once over. High quality, click removal, the whole works.

This 1984 single hails from the UK and is pure synthpop bliss. The main track appears twice here, in both extended and single form, and both versions are just ripe for the dance floor. There's also a Spanish promo issue of this single from 1985, but I believe it's nearly identical to this one, with the radio version appearing on side A. Also, there's a rumour out there that one of the members of this project was also in Sex Gang Children (Illuninated Records also featured several Sex Gang related releases, as well as Portion Control & Poison Girls), but I can neither confirm nor deny this for sure. However, what I *CAN* say is you're all gonna love this one.

East Ash- Crushing A Flood

Gloomy days ahead, so here's a post that fits the mood I'm currently rolling with at the moment. East Ash were a post-punk band from Columbia, Missouri, released on C'est La Morte records (read more here). This is the first of two albums, released in 1990 on LP and CD. Would be interested in hearing the second album, if anyone happens to have it.

The vocalist here reminds me an awful lot of David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand fame. Musically, it's a hybrid of early Modern English, Joy Division, & the shimmer of The Joshua Tree (mostly heard in "A Flood"), with a manic disco edge thrown in for good measure. Dark, gloomy, and driving, just the way I like it. This one definitely should not be missed!

It's almost time for Thanksgiving here in the States, and I've got quite a few things to be thankful for. Most pressingly, I'm thankful for this generous donation of a newly acquired, re-ripped, and cleaned up version of one of the greatest French gems in existence. As a huge champion of the French coldwave sound, you guys should know that this is no small statement. Fans of the genre should already be familiar with these two gloomy pieces of pefection, as this 1986 single been re-posted several times over the years, but not with such loving attention to quality and fidelity.

Here's a rare post-punk single from Germany, whose release date is unknown. Believe me, the single passed through my hands briefly, and I couldn't find a date on it to save my life! If i had to guess, I would say 1986, but don't quote me on that. This is their only release, on an otherwise unknown record label. A mysterious record, through and through! If anyone out there has any more info, feel free to let me know!

Otherwise, some nice cold sounds here that should feel right at home for fans of the genre. Really melodic and understated tracks, with just enough punch to make them interesting. I prefer the flip-side, but your mileage may vary. See what the fuss is all about:

UA- Cantante De Ópera 7''

Feeling fiesty this Friday, so here's a SECOND post for your weekend pleasure. It's been a while since I've posted anything minimal synth related, and I've had this single kicking around for years, so it's about damn time I posted it. So, synth fans, this one is for you!

Here we have a often-coveted 7'' from Spain, released in 1982 on Hispavox, who had tie-ins with EMI and are still around to date. This is the band's only release, pure minimal bliss. The A-side is all over the map, shifting in and out of tempos and featuring some rather impressive operatic female vocals, as the title might suggest. The B-side is the standout for me, a really pretty pseudo-instrumental (minimal vox) with washes of synth (and what sounds like, but likely is not a theremin). Both tracks are worth your attention, but don't let me tell you twice.

Various Artists- Doctor Death's Volume I- Cette Enfant Me Fia Mourir

Here's a great (and pleasantly affordable) compilation chock full of post-punk and coldwave sounds from C'est La Morte. I believe there are five editions in this series, this being the only one I own. The rest seem promising as well, judging from the inclusion of Handful of Snowdrops, Bill Pritchard, Heavenly Bodies, Beautiful Green Pea Boat, Clair Obscur, etc. You can get volume 4 here.

The story of these compilations dates back to C'est La Morte owner Woody Dumas, who used to have a radio program called Doctor Death, which specialized in cold/gothic sounds. The first edition was the very first release on the fledgling Louisiana label, and has several great (and in some cases, exclusive) tracks from some of my favorite bands of the era, including Breathless, Room Nine, and Lung Overcoat. It's also worthy to mention that the version of Throwing Muses' "Fish" differs from the Lonely Is an Eyesore compilation. A few unknowns for me here too, my favorite of that lot being the ethereal/cold contribution from Pat on the Back. M-1 Alternative also appears throughout the series, and contribute a great track here.

I really do love compilations like these, where every track fits together and is thoroughly enjoyable (also see the amazing L'Appel De La Muse series). All in all, you get a pretty good idea of what you can expect by simply looking at the cover. Not to be missed!

Love Club- Lime Twigs and Treachery CD

Here's one I've had in my possession for some time now, donated by a friend a few years back. It's been a while since I've thought about it, but after recovering from a major harddrive failure, I've since revisited this record with fond appreciation.

What we have here is a female fronted goth band from San Francisco, very much akin to the likes of Sunshine Blind, another US-based band who followed shortly after. This is their only album, released in 1990 on Popular Metaphysics, which was branded by MCA records, whose primary interest was metal at the time. Chances are that the band caught the label's attention but didn't perform as expected, as there are many cheap copies of this CD floating out there (and a wikipedia page!) but no audio to back it up. I've seen some requests for it out there in the ether, so about time this album is heard in full.

I must warn you: the second half of this album gets a little too torch song/Tori Amos-esque for my liking, but the first half just slays. Hard hitting tracks like "One Last Kiss" and "Holding Heaven's Hand" should feel right at home for any late 80s darkwave collection, and are worth the price of admission alone. I feel like this album would have been more commercially successful if it were released three or four years later, when the alternative explosion was well underway with darker undercurrents. Don't let the A word scare you off though, as you may find yourself surprised by the strength of the first few tracks.

Schadstoff- Fly K7

Sorry for the delay here, folks. Still working on finishing up our new apartment, and haven't been able to set up the ol' turntable yet. However, I have a few tapes I've ripped recently so I'll try to keep things going as I can. Here we have some excellent German guitar sounds here, from 1992. Very rough around the edges (the tape is actually a demo from the band, and seems to be the only thing they ever released), but there's quite a bit of promise to be heard here, if only they had stuck around a bit longer and made some official recordings.

Don't let the date fool you. Schadstoff very much falls into the vein of the mid-80s post-punk greats such as The Chameleons, Lowlife, Snake Corps, The Names, etc. It's certainly raw and noticiably underdeveloped given the circumstances, but I have a feeling you guys are going to dig it, regardless. Here's a rare US cassette for all you goth and post-punk lovers out there. Released in 1986, this is the only known offering from Twenty Four Hour World. Great gloomy sounds perfect for a rainy day, and very reminiscent of Joy Division and early Modern English with a little bit of nasty deathrock mixed in for good measure. Really chaotic, visceral stuff here, not for the faint of heart!

The Pollen- Contrasts Mini-LP

A recent, but welcome discovery, I've had this record in my possession for a few weeks now, and I'm just now finally able to offer it up here for you all to enjoy. Here we have a mini-LP from French band The Pollen, produced by The Sound's Adrian Borland. Naturally, you can expect some great post-punk sounds here, more of the dreamy variety. The album strikes me as a cross between Lush & Lively Art acts, with a little bit of that Borland magic thrown in for good measure.

Released in 1989, this record is a vast improvement over their unfocused full length, released the same year (I'm guessing, as there's no date on this LP and sources on the Adrian Borland tribute page also peg 1989 for this one as well). The full length seems a little more indie-flavored, as opposed to the cold sounds on this release, but perhaps I'll reassess it down the line. I also have a 12'' from the same era that fits more with this album, and will post that as soon as I have the chance!

Vono- It's Time LP

I've had this on deck to post for a bit, but what better time to post it than now? Mr. Goutroy of A Viable Commercial has dusted off and uploaded Vono's quirky and charmingly amateur first LP over at his space, so in true blogger camaraderie fashion, here's their final LP. Bookends for your listening pleasure, if you will.

Whereas Dinner Für 2 is a simple, yet detached record, this 1986 entry is anything but. Four years later, the duo grew as musicians and fleshed out their sound from their humble beginnings. It seems that one day, someone must have pissed in their cheerios, as the band developed a more aggressive EBM-esque sound in the vein of Body 11, Bigod 20, Front 242, and other such bands with numbers. However, this is not a play-it-by-numbers EBM record as you might expect from that description. The vocals are a little more palatable than most EBM bands of the time, organic tones in lieu of the overdriven vocals that would become a genre staple into the 1990s. If anything, the LP is harder to pin down, stylistically. Other touchstones I'm hearing here include mid-period Wire (Ideal Copy is my favorite, in case you were wondering) and the atmosphere of Peter Gabriel's third and fourth records (cool!). Also hard to deny the Public Image crib on track six. No samples, but well, let's just say it sounds like a response track.

There's no real standout hit a la "Headhunter" or "Sensoria" here, but this album functions well as a whole. Besides, there are plenty of deep, funky synth grooves packed that make this LP worth a peek for any fan of the wave spectrum.

The Lucy Show- Electric Dreams 7''

The Lucy Show are one of my all-time favorite bands of the 80s. Hands down amazing melodies, great vocals, production, the whole package. It comes as some surprise that this particular 7'' (their second, released in 1984) hasn't been posted to my knowledge. Crazy!

For those unfamiliar, The Lucy Show was formed by two Canadian-turned London musicians, who earned a bit of buzz for their first single, Leonardo Da Vinci (perfectly summed up and shared here). Peel picked up on the band, this 7'' followed, and the rest, as you could say, was History. A tour with R.E.M. brought the band to prominence, and their debut LP Undone dropped in 1985 and shot straight to the top of the college charts. Mania followed in 1986, and the band soon called it quits.

Really perfect pop, here. The A-side recalls early Cure and INXS to mind, while the B-side is a dark and gloomy affair, reminiscent of 4AD's earliest releases. Don't miss it!

Fantastic French coldwave with a slightly poppy edge here, released on Slim Productions, who boast a rather impressive roster of French obscurities and hits alike. Especially recommended for fans of Taxi Girl, with a little more bite. Release date unknown, not even listed on the record itself. A true mystery, for those who like that sort of thing. Educated guesses via catalog number place this as a 1985 release, but who can be sure of these things. Sounds like 1981 to me, but what do I know? Take a listen, take a guess!

Glenn Winter- Bruna Hundars Död K7

Here's a very rare cassette from Glenn Winter, courtesy of the ever-stellar Sean McBride. I was only familiar with this fantastic Swedish minimal synth artist via "Herrens Svar," which appears on the near flawless Orgelvärk compilation, an absolute must-hear for any self-respecting minimal synth fan. This particular tape hails from 1986 and features several tracks in the same vein. Tor Sigvardson of 18:e Oktober (a similarly amazing project) plays bass on track 6. Definitely don't pass on this one, folks!

Up next we have an uber cult French coldwave single from 1988, especially choice for fans of the (better) Nova Express tracks posted here and here, as well as the Panoramas single posted ages ago.

Nothing much I can tell you about these guys, aside from shedding a little light on M.S.R., the label which issued this 7''. Several other classics appeared on M.S.R., including Corps Diplomatique and Amour Puzzle, also nice touchstones for this single. Really cool stuff here in the always excellent French tradition, so hope you enjoy it!

Alan Shearer- Mines De Son LP

Here we have the first LP from Alan Shearer, released in 1984. Generally, it follows the same vibe as his excellent sophomore release (uploaded here in case you missed it). All instrumental once again, with some surprisingly poppy moments mixed in as well. Definitely some stunners in the mix here. I can't seem to get enough of "Snapshot" or "Internal Clock." The final track even reminds me a bit of some earlier Depeche Mode moments.

Funnily enough, I agree with comments made in the last post regarding video game music, as quite a few of these tracks call the classic NES soundtracks to mind. As someone who used to hold primitive boomboxes up to the tv screen to tape various soundtracks, I mean that as a compliment!

Here's a few words on the tracks:
1. Plucked from the 8 Essential Attitudes compilation. Picked it up cheap and while there are some gems, it's mostly a mixed bag.
2. From the No Surrender! compilation, an otherwise rough and tumble collection of skinhead/oi tracks from Rock-O-Rama records.
3. Very rare single release, one of this band's only tracks. Saw a release on The Trance Compilation.
4. Brazilian darkwave band who released a killer album in 2010, where this track hails from.
5. French synth from 1984...Stay tuned for a full post on this 12''.
6. B-side of a 1984 minimal synth single from the UK. If you have the a-side, holler!
7. Plucked from a 1985 compilation entitled Sounds from the Southern Scene Vol. 1. This band appears twice on the comp as the bookends. Their other track isn't nearly as good, but still worth hearing.
8. Brand new coldwave sounds from LA, can't get enough of this track!
9. Denmark band, from their first LP, released in 1982. Another track appears on SOR vol. 3.
10. An unreleased track from the UK band featured here.
11. Also from the 8 Essential Attitudes comp. Guitar-driven smash, and not the same post-Sisters band!
12. 1990s darkwave, released on a compilation of excellent like minded souls (Derrière Le Miroir, Lucie Cries, Frozen Autumn, all great bands)
13. Grabbed this 1985 12'' from the US in a dollar bin. Decent new wave throughout, but this track is a standout.
14. Another US band who issued two singles in 1985 on ESYNC records (Velvascurge!). Mostly power-pop sounds, but this track has a nice guitar-driven edge to it. If anyone insists, I have both singles uploaded for a future post, but this one is the real treat of the lot.
15. Scarce minimal synth from the Netherlands. Would love to hear this full LP!
16. 1990s darkwave band who issued two records before splitting up.
17. 8 Essential Attitudes.
18. 1983 synthpop single from the UK.
19. The standout track from this 1988 12''. Also from the UK.
20. Brand new (all female) post-punk/coldwave band from Italy. A new favorite, really tremendous stuff. Keyboardist also doubles as Mushy, who just issued a full length solo LP on Mannequin Records!
21. I belive this track is a demo from a new post-punk band from London. Certainly sounds timeless!

It seems like some folks are having troubles with the Radiance- "What Goes On" track. Some have said that it's not included in the zip, though it shows for me in a fresh download just fine. Excentrique Noiz- Matt Crescent LP

At long last, here we have the full length LP from Japan's Excentrique Noiz, which I must say, does not disappoint. Six killer tracks here, very reminiscent of the 7'' released a year earlier. It's prudent to mention that there are female vocals on the title track, courtesy of Syoko, the lead vocalist of G-Schmitt, another killer Japanese post-punk band worth many, many listens.

Carl Matthews- Old & New K7

Here's a fantastic dark ambient tape from Carl Matthews, a compilation of earlier and unreleased material from 1988. Fans of the Remote Viewing and John Costello releases should love this one.

You can read a brief, but informative history on Matthews on his official website, which doesn't appear to have been updated in some time. There were talks of CD reissues of his old cassettes via Sandpiper Records, but the site is no longer available. That said, I do believe Matthews is still active to date, with two releases last year.

Pretty Poison- No Tears 7''

Feeling fiesty today, so here's a second post, hot off the press. Contained within we have an early 7'' (red flexi-disc!) from Philadelphia's Pretty Poison, also covered here. You can expect the same (surprisingly and very pleasantly) dark sounds here, which should go without saying for those familiar with the excellent Tuxedomoon original. Seriously, this cover is BLISTERING, a nice take on the already great original, supplemented with a two minute percussive piece.

I didn't have time to take a snapshot of the record, but it's just a red flexi in a sleeve. Use your imaginations! I'll likely post a photo as time allows, but otherwise, enjoy.

Negatives In Colour- Caught In Possession 7''

Here's the lone 7'' from Negatives In Colour, a new wave band from the UK. The single is a donation from the great bx59cppw, and comes complete with the blessing of Peter Fenwick, the band's drummer.

Unlike many of the bands featured here at Systems of Romance, there's actually quite a bit of information to be found about the band, thanks to a new website and reverbnation page, which features several unreleased tracks. To briefly paraphrase, this five piece outfit formed in 1982, enjoying some nice exposure thanks to a BBC Oxford Roadshow appearance alongside Duran Duran, at the peak of their powers in 1983. This particular single earned a bit of success on The Tube, a program on Channel 4. The band split after a brief lineup change, but I'm told that Peter and Roland Rands are still playing together in a covers band.

One other track was officially released on the One Giant Leap compilation in 1983, which fetches some pretty crazy prices when it appears. You can find that one on the first edition of the Crispy Nuggets various artists comps.. Peter also tells me that the BBC Oxford session tracks have been made available for download here, so be sure to snag those as well. I'm particularly fond of "Shadow Walk."

This one may border conspicuously on 80s indie turf, but it's been hitting the spot lately as the summer creeps on and my interests turn to more guitar driven tunes.

In all honesty, I've had this 1989 LP kicking around for a while now, purchased sealed for a dollar at an upstate NY record fair (other scores included Trisomie 21's Playing the Pictures and the Winter Hours record I posted ages ago). It took a post over at Kentucky Fried Wave to remind me that I had it lying around, unopened and deserving of a rip.

You can read quite a bit about these guys via Kill Your Pet Puppy, where you can also find their first two 12'' EPs and a slew of photos. Pretty much all you could ever want to know about them appears in their writeup, so check it out!

As far as touchstones are concerned, this album does fit in quite nicely with the likes of the 80s paisley underground. Fans of Rain Parade, Winter Hours, early R.E.M., and Game Theory should be familiar with the sounds, which with a female singer in tow, also remind me of Ghost Dance and latter-day Xmal Deutschland. For me, the LP starts pleasantly enough but ends on the stronger side, with tracks such as "If You Believe" and "Her Dreamworld" standing out and giving it a bit of that dark flavor I like so much. Don't take my word for it, however. Here's the info:

V/A- Adaptations From the Moon: Tuxedomooning the World

Here's a recent compilation sent my way by John Costello, a name that should already be familiar from two previous posts. Here we have a CD release of Tuxedomoon interpretations from 2007, as recorded by several members of a prominent TM message board. This CD exists as a non-for-profit venture via the site Tuxedomooning.com and while it isn't available for sale, though there may be some copies available for those wishing to market the disc.

Fans of Tuxedomoon should find a fair mix of selections from the band's career, done with care and finesse by several prominent underground artists. Cult With No Name also appear here, and Costello contributes TWO tracks. Allow me to expand on this post with some info and behind the scenes from Costello himself:

"[The compilation] grew out of the TM yahoo group forum started by Erik Stein (he's also half of lounge electro duo Cult With No Name). Amid the renewed hustle of TM activity, French label Optical Sound released a covers cd in 2006, Next To Nothing, with artists including Simon Fisher Turner and Scanner. Oliver Schupp (of German band Festspielhaus), proposed a forum members covers cd and, when he found enough takers, took it forward from there. It was sanctioned by TM as a not-for-profit venture of 300 cds, with copies bought by the contributors to distribute how they wished and the rest sold by Oliver to forum members or interested parties at cost until they ran out.

I agonised for a long time over which track to choose, as there were so many candidates. Right up to the last minute I was going to do "No Tears" but I finally chose "Everything You Want," in a rawer rocked-up style closer to the live version on Ten Years In One Night than the early Subterranean Modern Ralph Records compilation album version.

I record with my good friend and producer Geoff Pinckney at his Alien 6 studio in Sussex. Geoff is in electro outift Tenek with Pete Steer, and ex-of Glasshouse who supported Gary Numan on a couple of tours in the late 80s/early 90s. My method of working is to record and mix each track in as close to a day as possible, but I gave EYW three to make sure it would pass muster - it's quite daunting doing something as an amateur that will be a tribute to a band you've loved most of your life, and you want to do it right. The session went smoothly, unbelievably so in fact, and I finished in two days - so for the hell of it I decided to do another. I chose "Egypt" because I knew I could do a minimal version fast, and it took just six hours to record and mix. I tried to do both in the spirit of TM and worked in a few motifs from other tracks; also, the bass on "Egypt" is a sample of "The Waltz," from Holy Wars. I had no idea if Oliver would find it surplus to requirements but he loved it and included it on the cd.

The reaction was very positive. The band issued congratulations on the forum for a job well done."

My Dad Is Dead- The Best Defense LP

Here's a collection of rarities by My Dad Is Dead, a post-punk/indie project from Cleveland, Ohio. My Dad Is Dead formed in 1984 after the breakup of Riot Archetecture, and since then has been primarily a solo outfit for drummer Mark Edwards. Revolving door lineups came and went over the years, and the band enjoyed some underground success as well as opening spots for bands such as Modern English and Butthole Surfers.

Edwards is still active to date, releasing MDID records well into the 2000s. Recently, Edwards put the lid on MDID and is now working under the moniker Secular Joy. A debut LP is currently in the works.

This particular collection consists of several leftovers from the band's early career. Tracks 1, 3, and 10 were slated for a 1987 EP release, while the rest of the tracks are a combination of album sessions (recorded during the Let's Skip the Details sessions) and home 4 track demos. The sounds here are definitely raw and guitar-driven, definitely recommended for fans of Big Black, Game Theory, Husker Du, early R.E.M., etc. Not a sound generally explored on this blog, but a cool record by a cool band that some of you may find enjoyable. It's certainly hitting the spot during this NYC summer heat wave. Here's the info:

Two of China- Telk Mee 12''

Contained within we have a classic slice of Westside Music synthpop, circa 1984, courtesy of Jeffo!, a fellow NYC DJ.

Generally known as a vehicle for Andreas Tomalla (Moskwa TV, Bigod 20, MCL), Two Of China released three 12''s in total (2 if you're not counting the Axodry collaboration), including a rather straightforward cover of "Los Niños Del Parque" by Liasons Dangereuses. This particular 12'' can still be found for dirt cheap (that can also be said about most Westside releases), but we all know that just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's good, don't we?

Just noticed the back of this sleeve comes with the potent quotable: "If you don't listen to this record you cannot enjoy the essence of future music." Well, what are you waiting for, kids!

I keep forgetting to post this one. A recent favorite, you may recall seeing these guys on the Systems of Romance vol. 1 compilation. A rare Japanese darkwave entry, Excentrique Noiz released two 7''s and a full length LP before calling it a day. Here we have their second 7'' from 1986.

Obvious touchstones here include Clan of Xymox and Danse Society on the A-side, while the flip is a fantastic piece of post-punk/coldwave. A strange stylistic shift halfway through the song, but still an awesome tune. Here's the info:

Violet Town- Violet Town K7

Here's a very generous donation from Ben in the form of a rare cassette release from 1986. Fans of the post-punk/coldwave sound should go ga-ga for this one, as I undoubtedly have.

At first glance as well as at first listen, this American-released K7 might suggest a few obvious touchstones. Firstly, the band's name is naturally an allusion to a track from (in my opinion), The Church's finest hour. Secondly, the tape was released via Primary Music, a virtually unknown label in Utah that obviously sounds like a nod to a classic Cure single (I wouldn't be surprised if this was a self-release under the guise of a label). As if the Cure comparisons weren't strong enough, we have the opening seconds of "Torn Inside," which immediately recall the title track from Seventeen Seconds to mind with their warm synths and back and forth melodies.

All of this said, this is tape is awesome. While there are a mix of sounds throughout, it generally sounds as if the band is combining the aesthetics of both bands mentioned above (also think Chameleons, Mighty Lemon Drops, Grapes of Wrath etc.), very surprising given the time period and the location of the band. From what I understand (and for those who were there, feel free to correct me), early Cure and Church imports were hard to come by in the United States, all but buried by those who didn't know to seek them out until both bands broke with their respective tour de forces. I'm sure folks had access to these records, but it wasn't as easy as going to their local record store, especially in Utah, to find these gems. Maybe that's just my imagination running away with me, but while there are dozens of Cure and DM influenced bands scattered throughout Europe, a US entry is very rare indeed, which makes this tape even more unexpected and interesting to me.

Ok, enough theoretical babble. Despite the obvious influences, this tape is definitely a treat to be heard, and many thanks to Ben for sending a rip my way! Here's the information:

The Trial- Pictures LP

Here's one that's been kicking around in some form or another for some time, but never complete, or never at tremendously great quality. You may be familiar with this band via the Crispy Nuggets VA compilations, one which featured a loose track from this LP and another the b-side off the band's debut 7''. I've been playing this LP out a lot lately at the Wierd party, so for those who have been asking about this one, here it is!

Released in 1991, here we have the debut LP from The Trial, a six piece (!) Czechoslovakian synth band. Fans of the heavy synthpop sound of the late 80s (Depeche Mode, Camouflage, Xymox's "Obsession") should find lots and lots to love on this LP. A few of the songs haven't aged so well, but the majority of this LP (especially side B) is phenomenal and I can't stop listening to it. Don't take my word for it though, see for yourself!

David Kane Retrospective (Nullstadt, Decay of Western Civilization, Demo K7)

If there's one synth whiz that the US can claim and attest to, it's the prolific David Kane. The name should be familiar with astute followers of this blog and others, for he's had his hands in many killer projects over the years. Most famously, he's partially responsible for the Trek with Quintronic material and the Celibates LP, both worth picking up if you haven't heard them already.

So last on the slab from Greg's personal stash comes a series of David Kane rarities which should please fans of the man as well as fans of forgotten new wave gems. Lots to digest here, but plenty to enjoy. Up first we have the Decay of Western Civilization 12'', a rather affordable and quirky piece of beat-heavy synthpop with Eastern culture references. Two versions each of these instrumental tracks. It was released in 1987 (though I believe the back sleeve says copyright 1986, so pardon the discrepancy on the mp3s). At the time, Kane was also moonlighting as a member of Electroman as well as lending his hands to various projects, which we'll touch on soon. Here's the details for this release:

The next LP is a full length from Kane's full time band, Nullstadt. It seems this one just recently appeared on the Willfully Obscure blog. (sorry for the double post, man!). I do agree with his assessment of this LP. The closest touchstone would be Japan's Tin Drum LP, though it's tough to get a fair shake on this record. There's the occasional Eastern influence on this LP as well, tying it to the Decay 12''.

You can read more about Nullstadt here, on a page chronicling the band's 2007 reunion (which included Celibates member Kent Weber, a frequent collaborator of Kane's even to date). Lots of fun facts about the band, including hints at other material that has yet to see the light of day. A very cool account! One thing I'm slightly confused about though, is the year of origin on this one. On a comprehensive David Kane site, we see that this LP came out in 1985, yet the stamp on the sleeve claims 1988. Perhaps it was recorded during the band's tenure and released post-mortem? Maybe there are more unreleased tracks to be heard! Well anyway, here's the info on this one:

Last but not least we have the real creme de la creme of this post, a demo tape consisting of early, unfinished Kane compositions. Many of these pieces would become Electroman and Alien Registration songs once completed, and many would never see the light of day. If I recall correctly from a conversation Greg and I had in person, many of these recordings were written on the fly, as Kane was giving synthesizer lessons to aspiring musicians in upstate NY. My understanding is that the students would learn and play over the previously existing backing tracks, making the student the real creator of the lead synth lines with Kane supplying the backdrop. Either way, plenty of music to be had here, as both sides of the tape span the full 45 minute allotment.

Many of the pieces here appear more than once in slightly different forms, while several span ten minutes in length. There are no tracklistings to be found here on this tape, just great unheard proto-compositions that should feel right at home for fans of the minimal synth/experimental/wave genre. DEFINITELY be sure to grab this one, if you check out any of these releases.

Hawaiian Pups- Split Second Precision 12''

Here's another record from Greg's personal stash. Some unexpectedly excellent new wave to be found on this 12''. Playful and strange melodies to be found left and right, with a slightly dark edge and plenty of pop veneer to keep things grounded. My favorite track here is the sultry and moody "Trash" though "Baby Judy" attracted a fair amount of college radio attention in its heyday. It appears here in two forms, as a single mix and extended mix. That particular track kind of reminds me of Berlin Express' "The Russians are Coming" with a little bit of Devo mixed in for good measure.

The three piece band was from New York City (hometown represent). This 1983 single (which can still be had at a reasonable price, for all aspiring collectors) was preceeded by a scarce promo-only 7'', released on Halloween in 1982. ~~Would love to hear that one, if anyone out there has it in their collection!~~-- Nevermind, grab that track HERE.

Berlin Blondes- Berlin Blondes LP

This week, I'll be posting a handful of records donated by a kind reader of this blog, who loaned me a few pieces from his prized collection. Thanks, Greg!

First up we have a record that's been posted and ripped in the past, but always at a low bitrate or quality. So pardon the redundancy, but here it is in high quality, 320 kbps form. This particular LP hails from Scotland and was released on EMI in 1980. This band was notoriously the launching pad for David Rudden, who left just as the band was getting signed to form Endgames. Jim Spender also would go on to join Altered Images after this LP while the remaining members would release one more 7'' before disbanding.

The LP was produced by Mike Thorne, who should need no introduction for fans of early Wire, Soft Cell, Bronski Beat, Furniture, Blur, and B-Movie, just to name a few. Quite an impressive resume!

Continuing with the name-dropping, this record should feel right at home for fans of Foxx-era Ultravox, Visage, Gary Numan, and the Bowie/Iggy sound. A little bit of tarted up synth-driven rock very suited for the era, and perhaps a little pastiche at the turn of the decade, but still a cool record worthy of being unearthed. Here's the info:

Kissing the Pink- The Last Film & Watching Their Eyes 12''

Merely uploading this one for a few friends who inquired at the Wierd party last night, when none other than the inimitable Sean McBride (aka Martial Canterel) dropped it during his set. Here we have the seminal Kissing the Pink track "The Last Film," a haunting military-driven tune that cracked the top 20 during the band's earlier years. It appears here in club form, and I believe this version, while stellar, has not been featured around these parts.

The single can still be had for an affordable price- in fact I've seen a handful of copies kicking around NYC for any interested and local parties!

As an added bonus, I've also uploaded the Watching Their Eyes 12'', my personal favorite track of the band's, which features an alternate club mix and an exclusive b-side. Here's the contents:

Turo- Agent Orange LP

Up on the slab we have the lone LP from Turo, a krautrock/NDW release that should be right at home for fans of the more oddball minimal synth sound. This particular LP hails from 1982 and was the brainchild of Matthias Thurow, who also operated under the pseudonym "Tales of Mr. E." This LP was predated by a 1980 release on the same label (Biber Records) under the name Turo's Tutti, but that's not all. Thurow's career dates back to the 1970s, as a member of Eulenspygel, a German prog band with a handful of releases under their belt.

Fans of P!off?, Neuland, and Sylvia should find lots to love here. Some really strange, moody, and wonderful stuff on this LP, counterbalanced with a few repetitive dance-oriented pieces and straight up pop tunes. There's even a song on here that reminds me of I'm Your Man-era Leonard Cohen, and that's pretty darn cool!

Needless to say, it's very difficult to put your finger on this one, but it's definitely worth a listen or two or three. Enjoy!

Here's another great coldwave release from the 1990s. Technically, this band hails from Switzerland, but employ the French coldwave sound of the 80s and early 90s so very well that they almost had me fooled, mostly because of all the French titles and references. Highly recommended for fans of Gestalt, Résistance, Mémoires D'automne, Lucie Cries, etc.

This is the six piece band's first LP, released in 1992. As far as I can tell, they have one more single (date unknown), a single-sided cassette, and a handful of VHS releases under their belt. Here's the info for this gem:

Dawn Fades- Fucking Face CD

Now here's one that I've loved since the first time I heard it many moons ago, during the early phase of the Wierd Records party. It's since become a DJ favorite here as well, and never fails to kick things up a notch. Great driving Italian coldwave-styled post-punk here, four tracks long. Aggressive, hard hitting, and chock full of incisive guitars and moody synths, just the way I like it.

The four piece band formed in 1992, taking their name from the infamous Joy Division track, and this debut CD was released in 1995. It was followed by one full length LP in 1997, just before the band split. However, they can be found on Facebook, for all curious parties.

Here's another post that ties in with the last one, only this time I have a more nostalgic connection to this record, as I loved it way back when and have recently rediscovered it, so to speak. I actually first heard the single and leadoff track from this record as part of the Pet Sematary II soundtrack, a pretty rotten (but kind of a guilty pleasure) flick with several alternative/shoegaze/etc. songs backing it. I was hooked from the get-go, and also fell pretty hard for the Mary Chain's "Reverence" as well. Nothing like a 10 year old singing "I wanna die just like Jesus Christ" around the house...

Most notably, this three piece project featured guitar contributions from Michael Cozzi, who was active in Shriekback and Lively Art mainstay Sky Cries Mary. I believe the band was based in the US, and had a sound similar to Lush, Curve, etc. Plenty of hooks and electronically driven fuzzed out bliss to be had here throughout the entire LP, which was released in 1992. Going to dip into the 1990s for a little bit here. Don't be scared, gentle readers, it's all going to be ok.

The 1990s may have been the breeding ground for a lot of awful, awful music (and a lot of stuff I can't quite let go, considering it was the decade in which I spent my adolescence), but there are some excellent gems to be found, even if they're more few and far between. A few that ring a bell are Derriere Le Miroir, Sunshine Blind, and the incredible Requiem In White, all worth a peek for those unfamiliar.

I have three posts lined up, all from the 1990s. One is a coldwave classic (we'll get to that one very soon, I promise) and the other two flirt a bit more with shoegaze, by far the best genre to come out of the decade. Today's band has already been featured on the excellent Return to the East blog, and here's their full length LP from 1992, a continuation of some of the great sounds heard on the EPs. Quite a few of the tracks from those EPs also appear here, alongside a few other gems. Touchstones, as previously mentioned, include The Young Gods, Sisters of Mercy, and Curve. I can't get enough of this record and I hope you all enjoy the slight change of pace.

Opéra De Nuit- Opéra De Nuit LP (Revisited)

Another "looking back" entry. Re-ripped and cleaned up this particular French gem as well, vastly improved sound quality and fidelity to be found within! A few clicks and pops of course, but shouldn't be too distracting and should serve as a definite improvement over the previous versions.

What else can I say about this record that hasn't already been said before? Absolute masterpiece, every track here is a winner. I might go so far as to say it's my favorite French LP, which is an awfully bold statement for a blog originally focused on the coldwave/touching pop movement.

I also have a copy of the scarce Amour Noir 12'' coming in the mail, so if that copy sounds better than the previous upload, you can expect the same treatment to follow. In case you missed it the first time around, you can read more about the band here. Don't let this one pass by!

Sorry for the delay, folks. Expecting a few goodies that haven't arrived in the mail yet. Will get to ripping those and posting them ASAP. In the interim, I've been digging back through the vinyl collection and making improved rips of some of the albums I've posted in the past, and figured I'd share the improved fidelity with all of you.

What better band to start with, then End of Data. I've had mixed results with every copy I've come across. Quality issues, a few glaring skips, etc. However, I've come across great sounding copies of both LPs, so with better source material come greater results. Of course, there's still minor crackle and a pop or two that just wouldn't scrub out, but that's what we love about vinyl, isn't it?

These are two bona-fide classics, two all time favorites from France and beyond. I listen to these albums just about every week, no small feat for me! In case you missed these the first time around, you can read all about them here and here. Hope you all enjoy the improvements!

So, it's been just under a year since the last two installments of the Sequins and Spandex series, and since summer is just around the corner, I figure it's due time to unveil the next two. Neuer Frühling- Abendlos 7''

Here's a minimal synth/NDW hybrid 7'' from 1982. Nothing out of the ordinary for the genre, but two very good tracks indeed. The guitar driven a-side is the clear winner for me, while the b-side has a bit of a reggae feel to it.

This particular 7'' was released on CBS Records (a surprising choice for a major label), and is the product of two Austrian musicians. Drummer Gerhart Walenta was also involved in an Austrian psych/prog band called Paternoster, who released one record in 1972.

Absolute- Demo K7

Here's an extra special rarity in demo form. Here we have a series of cassette demos recorded by Absolute, known for their handful of tracks on Vince Clarke and Eric Radcliffe. You can hear their officially released tracks over yonder, as part of the Reset Records collection that has been unofficially compiled. A handful of those Reset Records tracks appear here in demo form, so it's interesting to see how they differ from their studio counterparts. I'm also quite fond of the exclusive tracks here, especially "Take Her Away," a killer synthpop gem that should feel right at home for fans of mid-period Depeche Mode.

That said, I still can't seem to find much in the way of information about Absolute (aside from a little connection to the great John Fryer, who produced their second 7''), but someone uploaded what seems to be a promotional photo of the band on discogs. If the above image is correct, that might shed a skint of light on the subject. If there's anyone out there that can chime in with more, please don't hesitate! Otherwise, here's the info:

Berlin- The Metro 7''

Stick with me on this one folks. Any fan of new wave should already be familiar with Berlin, the Los Angeles based band led by Terri Nun and John Crawford. If you are unfamiliar with the band, please direct your attention here. While it's their later ballads and more commercial wave tracks that seem to be remembered, it's prudent to note that the band's first few releases were fantastic and rare entries to the US minimal synth scene. Information, the band's first LP, was the closest thing to Ultravox in the west coast scene, while songs like "The Metro" and "Sex (I'm A)" from 1982's Pleasure Victim were fast paced, sexually driven synth tracks that still remain classics to date. It's the kind of sound also explored on the SSQ LP, another personal favorite female-led new wave smash.

I had originally purchased this 1981 issue of The Metro to DJ, figuring it's far easier to pack a 7'' than a 12''. When it comes to wax, real estate is key, so it just made sense to purchase, spatially. Just yesterday, I needed a fix for "Tell Me Why" and went for Youtube, only to be presented with a much more driving and minimal mix than I remembered. Lo and behold, it's the same version on this 7'', released a year before the EP cut! A little bit of research quickly told me that this Berlin single I purchased ages ago was actually quite the rarity in their catalog, as both tracks appear in an earlier and more raw form. The differences are most notable in "Tell Me Why," though "The Metro" also features a different intro and what seems to be a different drum track. Either way, I'm happy to include this single here, and hope you kids enjoy it!

U.K. Viva- Mr. Mystery 7''

Here's a driving minimal synth single from 1980. A little bit of Buzzcocks/Undertones sound underneath all the electronics, kind of representative of the shift from punk to new wave, so fans of early 1980s synth should find this one to be a real treat.

You may have heard the b-side track on the New Wave Complex series, but the a-side is the standout, at least to my ears. This is the band's lone release, though another version of the single exists under the name Viva. Likely that there was another band with the same name, so they added the U.K. bit in to differentiate (also see bands like The Chameleons and Charlatans for this sort of treatment). The original Viva 7'' was released on Square records, home to an early Aerial FX release, another thematic touchstone for this track. The U.K. Viva edition appeared on Line records, known for pressings of Iggy Pop, Nico, and Smiths singles.

Popular Science- Out of This World 7''

Here's a 7'' I scored in a local dollar bin, hidden among a series of lesser singles. This record hails from the US, was released in 1983, and features a minimal synth sound combined with the male/female vocal melodies of X. A curious, but successful blend, especially on the A-side.

While I was able to track down the cover via Ebay, my particular copy of this single came without. Just an unassuming paper sleeve with the record tucked neatly inside, nothing to catch the eye and hint at the gem inside. Sometimes, these are the best treasures to be found...

There seems to be a full length LP from the band, released in 1981. I'm not sure it's the same band, since I haven't had the chance to check it out yet, though the time period and country seem suspect. You can check it out here or here. However, while it seems likely that it's the same band, I'm still not convinced. All signs point to Austin, TX for this 7'', while the LP was recorded in Rosendale, NY (not too far from where I grew up). If anyone can shed some light on this one, please do! Otherwise, enjoy!

Here's a killer 12'' I picked up in Chicago this past weekend. Shameless synthpop grooves ripe for the dancefloor here- three versions of the same track. The A-side is the club favorite, though those inclined towards instrumental mixes will find two on the flip.

This particular 12'' dates back to 1984 (the original version of the track from 1983), and is the first of three from this Belgian duo. Jan Van Den Bergh would achieve success as a major techno/house mixer, as well as the head of the highly influential Buzz label, a mysterious label who released several groundbreaking Detroit techno records in an overseas market.

This particular track should feel right at home for fans of Few Boys, Nightmoves, and any darker tinged italo (Amin-Peck/Fockewolf 190 etc.) Here's the information:

I have a few posts in line that go hand in hand with the Remote Viewing cassette posted a few weeks back. The first of such posts is the second tape from John Costello, one of the standouts from that compilation. His track "Gormenghast," which was recorded live in Cardiff, also appears on the b-side to this cassette, alongside two other performances from that particular show. Here's a tasty synthpop single from 1984. This is the band's only release, a three piece female fronted group from Canada who remind me a bit of The Flirts. Pure dancefloor energy on both tracks, though I tend to favor the A-side (which is a clever rendition of The Yardbirds classic). The 12'' was issued via Telescope Records, while a 7'' was released in Europe via Dureco Benelux, which features slightly shorter mixes.

This one has been on constant loop since discovering it, and it can still be had for reasonable prices if you know where to look! Not much more I can say about this one, other than: ENJOY!

Here's a 7'' from the UK that I can't seem to get enough of lately. Virtually no info to be had out there on the web, but I do know this record dropped in 1981 via Chicken Jazz, who released several records by The Waterboys. The cover looks a little reminiscent of A-ha's "Take On Me" video, but the styles are quite different. Here we have what seems to be two one-man minimal synth tracks. The a-side has a bit of a Felt/Eyeless in Gaza-esque vibe to it (a sound I very much enjoy), and features lyrics I'm sure everyone can relate to. The second track is a bit more driving, but still has a bit of sadness behind the uptempo melody. All in all, an excellent obscurity to kick off your week!

Quantom 1+3- Memoires Alchimiques K7

Cassettes, the final frontier. This particular tape has been on constant rotation over at SOR headquarters since receiving it on a generous loan. Not a lot of information on the web about this release, but there's quite a bit of info on the cassette itself, so I'll do my best to explain.

This particular cassette was released in 1993. The band were a three piece darkwave act from France (Axel Evigiran and the above pictured Lydia on vox and Orphee Hangiclist on guitar and programming) flirting with hints of EBM and coldwave. The sound should be right at home for fans of Babel 17, Neutral Project, Nagamatzu, and Peche Mortel (whose demos are some of the best treasures uncovered on the internet). Nice and dark, gritty, yet with catchy electronics permeating the mix.

While this is their first cassette, the band released two more tapes into the mid-90s. Perhaps those may see the light of day in time... For now though, enjoy this excellent slice of pure French coldwave.

Monty Cantsin- Ahora Neoismus LP

I have to admit, I always have fantasies of finding extremely rare and valuable records tossed away in the dollar bins. I've had my fair share of luck over the years, as I'm sure many have as well, but today's post was an unexpected gem, unearthed from one of my favorite record shops here in New York City. I have seldom seen a copy of this one for sale, and it's usually expensive when it creeps up.

This LP has been on my radar for ages, as I've only heard two tracks from this artist. One earlier track from the debut 12'' can be found on Nick's excellent VA comp, and I included an alternate version of a track from this LP on one of my own.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Monty Cantsin, the original artist (who I believe was Canadian) was a firm believer in Neoism, a musical practice with a highly underground philosophy. The original artist in question encourages any and all to perform under the same moniker, and many have. You can read more about Neosim here, and read more of the history of Monty Cantsin here.

Glades of Darkness- Demo K7

Here's one that's completely off my radar, as in, I can't find any information about it whatsoever. Really excellent demo tape from a band called Glades of Darkness, who seem to have a very Italian sound, judging from the songwriting, atmosphere, and use of electronics. They fit in right with bands like Weimar Gesang and Chromagain, but no real knowledge of their time and location to be found. Sounds mid-1980s to me as well, but I can never be too sure about these things! Either way, fans of those bands as well as gloomy minimal synth and coldwave should find lots to love here.

If anyone could tell me anything about this band, it would be most appreciated!

Francis Martin- Modern Times LP

Let's keep it rolling, shall we? Here's an LP from 1984, very very much in the same vein as Alan Shearer. In fact, there's a little bet amongst us bloggers that this very well may be Shearer, operating under a pseudonym for a major label release. There's no overwhelming evidence that proves this, but the synth and drum machine sounds are near identical, as is the style of the LP. However, this one comes from France, so who knows for sure?

All tracks are instrumental, with tons of great minimal synth grooves contained within. Definitely a real gem. Loving the cover on this one, which makes it seem like a classical record at first glance, but glad those tags are on the side to set the story straight!

Anyway, if anyone DOES know the story behind this one, I'd sure love to hear it!

Neuland- Neuland LP

Here's an interesting German LP from 1982. A curious mix of styles all sit together on this one- including italo-ish vibes, synthpop jams, NDW weirdness, and even a little 70s a.m. gold. Some tracks are naturally a little more interesting than others, but the LP is not without its merits. "Gehirnamputiert" is a clear standout, ripe for a little dancefloor action. "Sympathie" sounds as if it features a bassline from the late, great Mick Karn, and "Zukunftsvisionen" could easily feel at home on one of the Sequins and Spandex compilations. Your mileage may vary, so I'll leave it for you to decide:

Regard- Demo Recordings

Here's a real treat to kick off the weekend. Here we have the demo recordings of Regard, a killer coldwave/post-punk band. Curiously enough, while the band hails from Italy, the majority of their lyrics and titles are in French. Their only officially released tracks were issued on the (absolutely essential) VM Cinque compilation, posted here at Crispy Nuggets. I was just informed today that this band is NOT the Italian Regard, but a NEWER French band with the same name, which definitely clarifies things a bit!

While the tracks here are a little less upbeat, you can expect some excellent sounds here: gloomy vocals, atmospheric guitars, and warm synths. Definitely a must for fans of Formes Nouvelles, Mémoires D'automne, and the first Résistance record, to name a few. Don't miss out on this one!

Various Artists- Remote Viewing Vol. 2 K7

This particular cassette comes on generous loan from Sean Mcbride, sole member of Martial Canterel and half of Xeno and Oaklander, two of the current synth scene's most crucial players. For those who are unaware, the latest Martial Canterel record, You Today, has dropped via Wierd Records, and is quite the stunning piece of work. A modern classic, through and through. Pick up a copy here, if you haven't already!

This cassette, upon hearing it, has quickly become an all time favorite. Released in 1989 on Network 23 (the first installment appeared three years prior, and has yet to be shared to my knowledge), this tape features an hour and a half of instrumental ambient and industrial works from several obscure artists. It's a murky, unsettling, and highly atmospheric ride, without a single dud among the bunch. Many of the artists here appear exclusively among the series, while others have a few more scattered releases from around the same time. The standout for me is John Costello's "Gormen Ghast," which lifts off into minimal synth/dance territory after nearly three minutes of haunting atmosphere. There's also an exclusive track by Colin Potter and a solid gem by Steve Hillman, to name a few. This is highly recommended for fans of Tangerine Dream, Coil, and John Carpenter's film scores, but there's a handful of great minimal synth gems sprinkled within. Dig it!

Here's a German NDW/synth rarity from 1982. Seems to be the first release on Transparent Records. Both of these tracks are plucked from the full length LP, also released in the same year. Quite an expensive LP, if you can get your hands on it!

You can expect some excellent quirky synth sounds here. The A-side has an excellent synthetic bass groove running throughout it, a bit of an oddball dancefloor classic. The B-side is a bit more spastic, kind of atypical of the NDW movement, but enjoyable all the same. Here's the rundown:

Bad Baby- S/T & The Second Coming LPs

So far in 2011, I've been focusing on more guitar driven bands. It seems as if most of the synthpop/minimal gems have been uncovered, leaving very few rarities left to scour these days, many of which just aren't that great to begin with. That said, the early-to-mid 1980s were certainly a huge breeding ground for the post-punk sound, and I'm sure there's a slew of LPs left to discover in this realm. This particular German band fits the mold perfectly- and their material is as solid as it is seldom known.

Uploaded here we have both LPs from Bad Baby, a four piece from Hamburg. Cold guitar wave galore across two full records, released almost back to back. I tend to prefer the self-titled debut, but still find lots to love about their second 12'', which is the more commonly found of the two. Not much development in sound across these releases, just solid gloomy treasures that should be perfect for fans of Snake Corps, Blue In Heaven, Choir Invisible, Modern Eon etc. Googling this band is difficult, as little information can be found admist all the child-rearing tips and tricks out there. With that in mind, let's get down to business:

Siam- War and Peace and Inbetween LP

Curiously, I've just come across two bands with the name Siam, both of which will be featured here over the next few posts! This particular post concerns the Israeli band, featured on a previous Systems of Romance compilation.

This particular band formed in the mid-1980s, releasing a 12'' in 1986 (as Saiam) and this full length record in 1989. Material was recorded for a second LP, but was scrapped as the band split. A few tracks saw the light of day on a posthumous collection, released in 1996. As for this LP, it's definitely a new wave classic, chock full of post-punk rhythms, big hooks, and buzzing synths. Some tracks follow a similar rhythm driven sound as my last post, while others have a more anthemic feel akin to the likes of New Model Army and The Alarm. My favorite track is still the synth-driven "Changing," but there's definitely lots to love here.

Also worthy of note: this band features contributions from Hadar Goldman, who was one of the key players in Intensive Care Unit, previously featured here. I do believe that's a photo of Goldman on the cover, who is often credited on electric viola. Word on the street is that the band reunited in 2006 and is working on new material.

Empire- Eu 12''

Here's one on generous loan from Glenn of Cult of Youth/Blacklist. Speaking of which, make sure you check out the latest Cult of Youth record, released last week on Sacred Bones. Killer punk and western influenced neofolk, highly recommended!

As for this 12'', there isn't a lot of information to be found online, but hopefully someone can help shed some light on this project. Seems to be a one off release, issued on Celluloid in 1982. The band hails from France and combines the bleak coldwave sound of Charles De Goal and dancier, drum and bass driven post-punk akin to early Simple Minds (think "I Travel") or Airstrip 1. All four tracks feature the same rhythmic stomp throughout, and I can't choose a favorite of the lot. Hopefully you all enjoy this one as much as I do. Here's the breakdown:

Sport of Kings- Parade 12''

I know I just dropped a post late last night, but I can't help myself. Was just giving this one another listen after ripping it, and really feeling it today. Here we have the final 12'' from Sport of Kings, released in 1983. It still follows the same Factory Records template that their previous work did, adding in a mix of the Chicago and Miami sounds, respectively. Some might find the female vox on "A Fire is Burning" a bit much, but I truly love that kind of thing (also see the Mankinds Audio Development 12'' & Ministry's "I Wanted To Tell Her" for more of the same).

Don't fret though, even though this final 12'' is a bit more polished than their previous work, there's still plenty of dark, deep bass grooves for you to enjoy here. Signal Aout 42- Pleasure and Crime 12''

Just nabbed this fantastic EBM/New Beat 12'' from the local shop, and surprised not to see it shared anywhere else. Here we have the debut single from Signal Aout 42, aka SA42. Released in 1986, this precedes their debut album Pro Patria, which followed three years later. The band started as a three piece, changing members several times over their tenure. I do believe they're still active to date, playing shows across Europe and releasing music in a similar vein.

Fans of the aggressive new beat sound should love the hell out of this two track single. Both tracks have that nasty, powerful stomp that hits the spot on the dancefloor. The A-side was re-released two years later in heavily remixed form, most likely due to club success.

The Instigators- We Don't Know What We Want 7''

Here's a rare US entry to the new wave scene with a 2 track 7'' from 1985. A complete obscurity, with nothing to be found on the internet or elsewhere. The a-side is a great guitar driven track with a few great synth hooks in tow. Almost sounds as if R.E.M. ditched the American underground and went for a more European aesthetic. It also kind of reminds me of the VHF LP, for those who enjoyed that particularly rare gem. A little gloom, but catchy all the same.

The b-side is far less interesting to me, with a more happy-go-lucky melody that recalls The Kinks, but different strokes for different folks. I'll leave it for you all to decide.

Takumi- Meat the Beat LP

It seems as if Japan is one of the last vestiges of rare synth music, with many more hidden gems yet to be discovered. With that in mind, here's an LP from 1983. Not a lot of info to be found on this one, but you can expect some great minimal synth-tinged tunes here, some with lyrics in English, and some more experimental and quirky than others. Other tracks, like "Mein Schatz," are perfect for the dancefloor. For me the album really rolls up its sleeves and gets serious during the second half, but your mileage may vary.

There also exists a 12'' for Fragments of Time, released around the same time. I'll keep my eyes peeled for that one, but in the interim, here's the information for this little gem:

February seems to be a very post-punk month for Systems of Romance thus far. With that in mind here's an excellent LP from the UK which I discovered in a local record bin for just a few dollars. A random purchase, selected on the strength of the cover and a quick turntable preview. Some awesome sounds here, reminiscent of Southern/Death Cult, but with clear, catchy synth lines on a handful of the tracks. Fans of bands such as Play Dead, Into A Circle, Snake Corps, and the Situation Two sound should really enjoy this one.

This appears to be the band's only full length LP, though three singles were released around the same time. While there isn't a lot of information about the band themselves, many gigographies include shows with the band over the years. Most notably, member Roman Remeynes sparked some controversy when calling in about the Ukranian John Peel Sessions performed by The Wedding Present. Fluent in Ukranian, Remeynes playfully stated that the band was 'bastardizing the music.' He was then invited to join in for the second peel session!

Here's a series of releases that haven't been posted yet, to my knowledge, but are certainly worth hearing. Fans of dark synth music should be familiar with this French coldwave/synth band, for their track "Anyway" is a genre staple. The track also appeared on last year's Cold Waves and Minimal Electronics compilation, and the remaining 7'' tracks can be found here or here.

However, here's the band's other two releases- the 1986 Purge An Urge LP and the vocal version of the Mr Schumaker 7'', released in 1984. You can expect the same strange, yet danceable edge on all of these tracks. Here's the rundown:

For those not as jazzed about the previous guitar-driven posts, here's something that should whet your appetite and offset the darkness a bit, courtesy of BX. I posted the a-side to this magnificent French minimal synth 7'' on the first Systems of Romance compilation, and suffice to say, the b-side is of similarly high quality. Also an instrumental, but some great grooves here.

This 1981 single is Theirry Meyer's only release, so not much more to tell about this one. Enjoy!

It's been a long eight months, but I've since tracked down the remaining Sanity Plexus discography, consisting of a 12'' and a full length LP. While the band taps into a little more production value here, there's still the raw, DIY aesthetic throughout both releases that appeals. Fans of raw post-punk and minimal synth should find lots to love here.

Claude Raines- Claude Raines LP

I've been meaning to post this LP for months now, don't know why it's taken me so long. Up on the slab is the lone LP by Claude Raines, a US based guitar-driven post-punk band from Rochester, NY. Rochester must've been a great breeding ground for awesome, underrated post-punk, between this LP and of course, Eleven Pond. In fact, Cedric Herrera, vocalist for this band, was also the singer of Red Violet Red, the band that preceded Eleven Pond!

The closest touchstones for this 1987 LP include The Church, The Chameleons, Psychedelic Furs, and The Snake Corps, complete with the big guitar driven sound of all those bands. A little bit of background noise on side A of the rip- it seems as if my copy of this LP has seen better days, but nothing terribly distracting from this otherwise excellent LP. According to the band's Myspace page, run by an official member, they are hoping for a reissue and are looking for interested parties or labels who could make it happen. Hopefully this post here can bring this excellent LP to more widespread attention. Feel free to reach out to the band!

Here's a killer post-punk 7'' from 1982, released on Portion Control's Rhythmic Records. The band hailed from the UK and this is their only release, though Albie De Luca of Gene Loves Jezebel/Furyo was a member. Definitely a must for fans of (early) New Order and Modern English. Gloomy vox and punchy rhythms make this one a must for all fans of this kind of sound!

DADA- 12'' Discography

Here's the full 12'' discography of DADA, another new wave band from New York City. Contained within are both of their releases, both which walk a fine line between catchy minimal synth and bouncy synthpop.

The first 12'' was discovered whilst record shopping with Goutroy, who recently relocated to NYC via San Francisco. I randomly ran into him at a lesser record store, after a rather unceremonious trip home. A little solo shopping therapy turned into an afternoon of bin-hopping around the village. Sometimes I shop with the intention of looking for things I know, love, and plan to DJ. Other times, an interesting cover or title catches my attention, which is how I find most of the records posted here. However, this record was plucked out by Goutroy at one of my favorite shops in the East Village, a place that keeps odd hours and specializes in new wave. After one brief listen (he had placed this record in the "maybe" pile), I quickly became obsessed (perhaps annoyingly so) with his purchase, and quickly hunted down a copy of my own, and we've both been spinning it regularly at the Wierd party since. Camaraderie at its finest! That's not to say there wasn't a bit of competitive edge between us that day, as there tends to be when two underground music collectors hunt in the same shop at the same time. I feel like I paid more attention to what he had in his stack as opposed to the bins in front of me. He found R.E.K.'s excellent 12'' (found here at Crispy Nuggets) and I seethed with jealousy. That said, we both found each other some excellent gems, and both walked away with some hefty purchases that day. The rest, you can say, was nerd history.

I was able to snag the second 12'' online for a relatively cheap price, and while I prefer the first release overall (especially the amazing a-side), the two sound very similar. Not surprising, given that they were released only one year apart. The band seemed to have a sense of humor, from their vocal delivery, lyrical content, and even the record label (presumably self-released under "A Major Recording Label," whose only releases are these two records). The band members even all shared the same last name, though they may very well be brothers. Slight tongue-in-cheek humor aside, these tracks are perfectly suited for a dancefloor, and are some of my favorite obscure gems.

You may have seen this one over at Capa Nostra Syndicate, but not sure what's up with the rip there, as it's pretty unlistenable. What we have here is some pretty solid new wave from hometown NYC, with a slight commercial edge to some of the tracks. Some of the songs fall a little flat for me, but some are unexpected synthpop killers. I'll let you all decide which tracks are which, but either way, this one's definitely worth a listen or two.

Perfect Jewish Couple- Ménage À Trois 7''

Here's another oddball minimal synth gem I've had sitting in the upload queue for some time now. A rare entry from the United States, Ohio to be exact, dating back to 1985. You have two mixes of the catchy and quirky single here, backed with a more atmospheric track on the flip. I personally prefer the b-side, but especially enjoy the duality of this release.

You can hear more from the band on a 2007 CD reissue, which features some unreleased gems and "The Fall." This release was prompted by several inquiries from fans and collectors over the years. Here's a scarce minimal synth single from Austria. The a-side is an infectious little new wave gem, while the b-side is a manic piece of oddball synth- something for both sides of the minimal synth spectrum!

This is Zerbrechlich's only release, but the story doesn't end there. Zerbrechlich was the electronic side project of Dämmerattacke, who appear on the very first Systems of Romance compilation. The Zip Guns, who issued one LP in 1994, also consist of several Dämmerattacke members.

Picked this 7'' from 1985 up at one of my favorite NYC record shops, the newly unveiled Heaven Street Records in Greenpoint. Bears no relation to either the Dorian Gray posted here, or the Dorian Grey posted here, though both are worth checking out as well. Seems to be a popular name for those in the pre-Google age!

What we have here are two tracks from the UK wave scene that strike a balance between Into a Circle and Crocodiles-era Echo and the Bunnymen. Not shocking to hear the band once supported Gene Loves Jezebel, as there's a melodic post-punk vibe running through this single. The b-side is a more percussive and groove-oriented remix of the title track, for those who appreciate that sort of thing. Dig it:

Thanks to the Museum of Canadian Music (www.mocm.ca) for the information and rip on this one, here's the incredibly scarce 12'' from Glamatron, released in 1981. Some excellent minimal synth tracks combined with organic touches, sometimes reminiscent of John Foxx-era Ultravox. Either way, a true gem. Kurt Laporte, credited as a songwriter on this release, went on to join Vis-A-Vis, who released THIS great record. Here's the info for this killer 12''. Enjoy!

Swiss Navy- Back to the Wall 12''

Rolling right along, here's a recent dollar bin snag that's every bit as good as I was hoping. Pulled this out of a bin based on the date (1983) and cover art alone, threw it on to preview, and was pleasantly surprised. It's nice to know there are still plenty of undiscovered (and affordable) gems out there!

Not much I can tell you about this one, though. I've been told that the label, Phonogram Ltd., was not a true label, but instead, a company responsible for licensing tracks to smaller labels. I have to take another glance at the sleeve to confirm, but a few listings claim that this record was released on Mercury in the UK. Either way, Swiss Navy had a mind to create a dancefloor smash all over the world, and they damn well succeeded with this one, in my book. I don't care much for the third track, a quirky earworm that while charming, can't hold a candle to the title track. However, the two mixes of "Back to the Wall" more than make up for it. First, we have some killer French synthpop, reminiscent of Depeche Mode with some slight italo leanings. The same track appears here twice in different forms, and I can't decide which one I like better. This 12'' appears on the Fan Club label, another Damned-inspired offshoot of New Rose records, which featured Taxi Girl, Metal Urbain, and Kas Product as well as some classic proto-punk material.

Alan Shearer- Dark Is the Color LP

Sorry for the onslaught of posts, folks! Got ants in the pants, I guess- lots of cool things I'm excited about posting in the new year. This one was just sent to me this morning by Mr. BX, and since I've been dying to hear it for some time, I figured some of you might be anxious to hear it as well.

Contained within we have the second LP from French musician Alan Shearer, released in 1985. I included the final track on this LP in the recent Systems of Romance compilation post, so some of you may already be familiar with this album's general vibe. You can expect more of the same instrumental synth grooves here, some more melodic and ambient than others. Reminds me of a cross between Tangerine Dream and some of John Carpenter's more dancefloor electronic tracks. Definitely an interesting listen!

Goûts De Luxe- (Mostly Full) Discography

Hot on the heels of this morning's post, here's a very nearly complete discography of French synthpop band Goûts De Luxe. Some of you may already be familiar with the band, as a few of their a-sides were prominent, though now obscure, new wave hits- some of the best of the era. I also included one of the band's finest moments (the killer minimal synth-esque b-side "Last Train") on the most recent installments of the Systems of Romance loose tracks compilations. Since I haven't seen their work shared out there, I figured it was due time to organize it and sort it all out for everyone's enjoyment.

The band's origins date back to the mid 1980s in Brest, a city in northwestern France. The band's lineup changed a handful of times throughout their short time together. After recording (or, in actuality, NOT recording) on the first single, original guitarist Jean-Éric Montfort left the band and was replaced by Marianna Kliska, wife of vocalist Jacques le Honsec. They released two more singles before calling it a day.

With the exception of the instrumental version of "Les Yeux de Laura," and the promo mixes of the track, this zip file ocntains all the tracks recorded by Goûts De Luxe during their time together, including all three singles and respective b-sides. I hope you all don't mind missing out on the instrumental mix, as I've never found them to be very necessary, but I should be able to track it down (in time) if needed. However, as a consolation, I have included a different extended mix of "Omaha Beach" that I can't quite place on either single, with a different running time and everything! If anyone knows where it belongs, do chime in! Otherwise, let's get to the details:

Monozid/Bootblacks Split 7''

I have some killer archival posts to kick off the new year (starting this afternoon), but everyone knows that modern artists need love too! First things first, I'd like to pass on a free 7'' from two chums of mine from two different lands. Here's a blistering 7'' split from Bootblacks (a local NYC blues-punk outfit reminiscent of The Gun Club) and Monozid (hard hitting German post-punk with a hint of NDW). You get two tracks per band with this release! This is Bootblacks' first appearance on record, while Monozid have a handful of releases dating back to their debut CD-R in 2006.

The Bridge- Love Dance 12''

I have one more thing to post today, so might as well drop it now, while the iron is hot. Here's a classic 12'' by The Bridge, a DJ favorite of mine for some time now, recently acquired on vinyl. I believe this synthpop outfit acted as a three piece, releasing several singles in the mid 1980s. This particular record was produced by Paul Bell, who then went on to form Zerra One.

There's a bit of discrepency between their first two singles, so let me try my best to explain. As listed online, there's both a 12'' for Love Dance (today's post) as well as a single release entitled Industrial Love Dance, but both feature the same tracklisting, more or less, with slightly tweaked titles. Maybe the label (Second Vision) thought it was best to steer clear of the 'industrial' tag? If anyone can shed some light on this situation, I would be most appreciative!

The versions on this 12'' also appear on the Industrial Love Dance single, alongside a shorter, more radio-friendly version of side A, which I've uploaded seperately for good measure. So with this post, you get all three versions of "Love Dance," an edgy synthpop track with excellent hooks and solid vocals. What more can you ask for?
